🌍 COP30: Climate Change Is a Maternal Health Emergency As UN Climate Change #COP30 continues in Belém, Brazil, we cannot ignore a critical truth: climate change is already harming pregnant women, new mothers and babies disproportionately, both physically and mentally. @mmm.makemothersmatter has collaborated with Saravanan Thangarajan ( @harvardmed Visiting Scientist | @who & @wellcometrust Advisor) on a new policy brief co-authored with our Head of Advocacy at the UN, Valerie Bichelmeier, exposing a long-overlooked crisis. The publication exposes how heat, pollution, displacement and rising unpaid care are hurting maternal mental & physical health. It’s time for climate action that protects mothers and newborns.
🌍 Gender equality must be at the heart of climate action. Achieving climate justice requires the full and equal participation of all women — including mothers. Yet too often, their caregiving roles, which sustain families and communities, keep them out of decision-making spaces where their voices are most needed. In 1992, the world came together in Rio de Janeiro to commit to tackling climate change under the UNFCCC - United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Thirty years on, as leaders gather in Belém, Brazil for #COP30, we must move beyond words to inclusive climate solutions. At Make Mothers Matter, we believe that care is the quiet force of resilience — when floods destroy homes or heatwaves straining health systems, it is often mothers, who hold communities together. That’s why we call for care to be recognised as essential climate infrastructure, as critical as energy, water or roads. Because investing in care means protecting rights, strengthening resilience, and building a more equal and sustainable future for all. 💡 Learn more about why gender equality is at the heart of climate action, in this article by Gizem Demirni Nirennold, MMM Representative at the United Nations in Geneva. #COP30 #GenderEquality #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #CareEconomy #MakeMothersMatter #FeministClimateAction
To break the cycle of poverty, we must start by supporting mothers. Today, Johanna Schimma, Head of MMM’s EU Delegation, is at the European Parliament for the first-ever Anti-Poverty Day, organised by the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN) together with the Intergroup on Fighting Against Poverty and Ergo Network. In a room filled with MEPs, EU officials and civil society leaders, one message resonated clearly: 👉 Tackling mothers’ poverty is essential to ending the intergenerational transmission of poverty. 🎯 Make Mothers Matter is proud to co-lead the workshop “Protect Children, Protect Europe: Tackling Child Poverty” as part of the EU Alliance for Investing in Children, underlining that empowering mothers and investing in care are crucial to achieving the goals of the European Child Guarantee. Thanks to all the speakers and partners driving systemic change for children and families across Europe. ✨ No strategy to end poverty will succeed if mothers are left behind. It’s time to make motherhood visible in social and economic policy.💚 If you agree 👉 Share in your stories & Repost 👉 follow @Make Mothers Matter @EAPN @Eurochild @ergonetwork 👉 tag the leaders, policymakers and changemakers who should be part of this conversation.
We were at the Women Economic Forum Conference, in Palermo and G100 Mediterranean Meetings — where women leaders from the Mediterranean united by their will to seek change in the world. At the event, Anne-Claire de Liedekerke, President of Make Mothers Matter, addressed the audience with a powerful message that resonated deeply: 📣“Motherhood remains one of the main reasons why women are underrepresented in leadership positions, and this has to change.” We believe that gender inequality is not driven by women’s choices but by the failure to value care. At MMM, we work to make invisible care work visible, by recognising that: ➡️ Care is work, vital to the economy and to human development. ➡️ Motherhood builds leadership, resilience and skills that matter in every sector. ➡️ Caring must be shared and supported, by both parents, and by society as a whole. Thank you to the Women Economic Forum Italy, G100 Mediterranean and the splendid setting of Villa Zito, for giving MMM the space to bring visibility to mothers’ leadership. 🌍 Together, let’s rewrite the narrative around motherhood — from limitation to leadership. 👉 Share in your stories, 👉 follow @Make Mothers Matter, 👉 tag the women leaders, policymakers and changemakers who should be part of this conversation. #MakeMothersMatter #WEF #WomenLeadership #Motherhood #CareEconomy #GenderEquality #womeneconomicforum #WEF2025 #globalleadership #WEFMediterranean

Let’s talk about the UK’s paternity leave and how it supports mums.. 📣 “Paternity leave is a mother f…r” That’s the bold billboard campaign coming from Dad Shift and Pregnant Then Screwed. We agree that the UK paternity leave is a joke. It is the worst in Europe, fathers get just two low-paid weeks. This outdated system doesn’t only fail dads — it fails mothers, children and families. The absence of fathers & non-birthing partners in the early days of a child’s life affects:: 🍼 mothers’ recovery and mental health 👶 babies’ bonding and development 💼 long-term gender equality at home and at work When dads can’t be present, mothers pay the price — physically, emotionally, and professionally. At Make Mothers Matter, we stand with all calling for fair, paid and longer paternity leave — because caregiving should be shared, valued, and supported. 💬 Agree? Share this in your stories, tag us, @pregnantthenscrewed and @dadshiftuk & let’s make noise for change! 👉 Join the campaign in linkinbio or here: https://linktr.ee/dadshift #Makemothersmatter #dadshift #pregnantthenscrewed #paternityleave #maternityleave #maternalmentalhealth #TwoWeeksIsntEnough

What MMM asked the European Parliament
Last week, we spoke directly to EU policymakers and institutions at our event at the European Parliament. We put forward 5 actionable recommendations for mothers in Europe: 👉 Parental leave: Moms still take more leave than dads. When that leave isn’t fairly paid, it’s mothers who lose income, career progress, and long-term security. Paid leave must be equal and fair — so parenting costs are shared, not carried by moms alone. 👉 Flexible work: Right now, parents only have the right to ask for flexibility — and employers can say no. Flexibility shouldn’t be a favor. It should be a right, available to all. 👉 Maternal mental health: Every parent deserves support during pregnancy and after birth — but too often, this need is ignored. Maternal mental health must be included in the EU Child Guarantee, and the EU should adopt a Recommendation on perinatal mental health so no mother is left behind. 👉 Healthcare: Pregnancy and early motherhood are times of change. Anxiety and depression are common — yet mental health is excluded from care. Integrating perinatal mental health into maternal and child health systems (implementing the 2022 WHO guide on perinatal mental health) means moms get support and children get the best start in life. 👉 Unpaid care: Every day, millions care for children, elders and families — without recognition or pay. This invisible labor is the backbone of our societies. It’s time to value care as essential work and support those who provide it. 💡Join us in demanding these changes. SHARE this post.

👉 Garde, finances, temps… Les raisons sont multiples. Les conséquences, souvent invisibles, amplifient les inégalités. 📊 Données issues de l’étude “State of Motherhood in Europe” menée par @makemothersmatter En savoir plus ? 🔗 Lien en bio ou https://makemothersmatter.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/France_One-pager-MMM-State-of-Motherhood-2024-1.pdf 💬 Partage si toi aussi tu veux briser le silence. We All Talk - Care in a Wellbeing Economy
😲 “Two billion people. Eight hours a day. Unpaid.” In the latest edition of the @wellbeingeconomyalliance - WEAll Talk, host Simon Ticehurst reacts to Valerie Bichelmeier’s - @unitednations representative - presentation on the true scale and value of unpaid care work. 💥 A third of humanity is doing essential work — FOR FREE — and it is still invisible in our economies. Why? Because care work, mostly done by women, is undervalued. Yet, the global economy rests on its shoulders. 👉 Watch the full talk here https://lnkd.in/e3P6P6nq or linkinbio 🙏 A big thank you to @wellbeingeconomyalliance for inviting us to be part of this vital conversation on care in a wellbeing economy.
